iPhone 17 vs iPhone 17 Pro: Expected differences

Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup is just weeks away, and for the first time in years, the base iPhone looks like it might deliver enough to satisfy mainstream buyers. The iPhone 17 finally gets a 120Hz ProMotion screen, slimmer bezels, and a sharper 24 MP selfie camera — all things users have been asking for since at least the iPhone 13 era.

The iPhone 17 Pro, meanwhile, is doubling down on “pro” features: a sturdier half-aluminum build, vapor chamber cooling, and a triple-48 MP rear camera system. It’s the most ambitious Pro yet, but also expected to be bulkier.

Design and Size

Big changes coming to the Pro

The iPhone 17 is said to move to a “splicing” frame design that rounds off edges, making it easier to hold. We also expect to see slimmer bezels, as the display is highly speculated to be the same as that of the iPhone 16 Pro.

The iPhone 17 Pro, however, will take bigger risks: titanium is supposedly gone, replaced by a half-aluminum, half-glass build that should improve durability. There's also a new horizontal rectangular camera bar, which will make the new Pro models instantly recognizable, although I am not sure if it will be for the right reasons.

Display Differences

The iPhone 17’s biggest win is finally getting 120Hz ProMotion, a feature Apple intentionally held back for years. It levels the playing field with rivals — and even with the Pro in basic smoothness.

The Pro still edges ahead with LTPO down to 1Hz, enabling Always-On Display and better battery optimization. Apple was also apparently testing an anti-reflective coating but scrapped it — disappointing, considering competitors like Samsung are pushing glare resistance further.

The reduction of the Dynamic Island remains debated, but most reports suggest no change. Face ID is unchanged across both models and will still be the only biometric available.

Performance and Software

A new, more efficient chip

The A19 will keep the base iPhone smooth, but with only 8 GB RAM, it risks feeling constrained once Apple finally ships its delayed Siri overhaul in 2026 (although there are rumors of it being postponed to 2027). By contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro’s 12 GB RAM and vapor chamber cooling give it breathing room for sustained gaming, video work, and Apple Intelligence features coming in the future.

Of course, both phones will run iOS 26, which introduces the flashy but polarizing “Liquid Glass” look. We will also see features like Call Screening, Live Translate for calls, and smarter Message, which genuinely sound useful, but most of them are Apple catching up to Android rather than something new being offered to the table.

Camera

The main separating factor

The iPhone 17 sticks with a dual-lens rear camera. We expect the image quality to be mostly unchanged from the predecessor, since there is no word of new camera hardware. That said, leaks point at a new 24 MP selfie camera, which should offer sharper video calls and more detailed selfies.

*expected

It is, as usual, the Pro model that will be getting the more significant camera upgrades. The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to come not two but three 48 MP cameras, with the new addition being a brand new 48 MP telephoto snapper. Reports also claim a larger main sensor, and possible 8K video. There were also rumors of variable aperture, but that's unlikely.

Battery Life and Charging

Finally, good wired charging speeds

Both phones are said to adopt stacked batteries with the same adhesive that made the previous generation easier to repair. Capacities are expected to creep up only slightly, but we expect to see better efficiency from the N3P chips.

*expected

Wired charging is said to increase to 35W, while the wireless will remain at 25W. Some reports also state that Apple has tested reverse wireless charging on the Pro but that doesn't guarantee that we will see the feature in the final product.

Summary

The iPhone 17 finally addresses long-standing frustrations, potentially making it the most compelling base iPhone in years. For the first time, it feels like you’re getting real value at the $799 tier. Still, Apple remains restrictive — there’s no telephoto camera, and it’s limited to 8 GB of RAM, a spec that’s becoming increasingly important for powering advanced AI features.

The iPhone 17 Pro, meanwhile, continues to lean into its role as the creator and power-user device. It’s expected to bring a much-needed telephoto camera upgrade, vapor chamber cooling for better sustained performance, and a sturdier overall build. These changes don’t reinvent the Pro, but they strengthen its position as the iPhone for those who demand more.

Looking at the bigger picture, the real shift this year is that the base iPhone is no longer generations behind in display tech. But apart from that, the familiar separating factors remain the same: the Pro still gets a telephoto camera, stronger performance, and more premium hardware. The choice ultimately comes down to whether you truly need that telephoto lens and extra performance — or if the newly improved base iPhone is finally enough.
